Fans of Willy Wonka are in for a tasty treat!
It was first reported in January 2021 that Warner Brothers intended to create a Wonka prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The project has been in development for years prior to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them producer David Heyman joining it. Three different versions of Roald Dahl’s classic story have now been produced by the company.
In the film, Timothée Chalamet will play the young Willy Wonka, which will be the actor’s debut singing and dancing performance. This came to light eventually. The actor provided fans with their first look at his character in an Instagram photo that has since been deleted, which featured Chalamet donning a brown top hat and a purple coat. In the caption, he made a reference to the line from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory that Gene Wilder said, “The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last… WONKA.”
Along with other stolen set photographs, his image sparked social media jokes that mocked Chalamet’s portrayal of Willy Wonka. Barrie Baggins, wrote on Twitter: “I was expecting WONKA to be dark af 🫠”

Perhaps it’s an homage.
The internet taunts were a topic of discussion for Chalamet in his October 2022 Vogue UK cover story. “You know what’s really funny about that is that it’s so misleading,” he said. “This movie is so genuine and joyful.”
The Oscar nominee went on to say that the actor from Dune has a challenging challenge because he sings in seven of the movie’s musical numbers. “I hate to say it, but the dream as an artist is to throw whatever the f— you want at the wall, you know?” he said. And I guess what I’m finding is that, even though an artist’s life can still be extraordinary, one’s adult and personal life might be pretty ordinary.

What is Wonka about?
Although the plot details have not yet been revealed, the upcoming musical Wonka will centre on a young Willy Wonka before he matures into the legendary chocolatier described in Roald Dahl’s 1964 children’s novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
When Warner Brothers debuted the first official video from the film in April 2022, Chalamet could be seen saying, “Is everybody ready?” before tap dancing on a table, giving fans a preview of his portrayal of the candy manufacturer, according to Variety.
As the video came to an end, Chalamet, according to Deadline, read the following words off a candy wrapper: “It’s not the chocolate that matters. With whom you share it will vary.
Who plays what role?
Chalamet plays a young Willy Wonka in the film alongside other well-known performers like Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, and Olivia Colman. Sally Hawkins portrays Mother Wonka.
The film also has appearances by Calah Lane, Natasha Rothwell, Matt Lucas, Jim Carter, and others.
Costar Key said of Chalamet’s performance in November 2022, “There’s this wonderful effortlessness about how he plays Wonka.” The actor “drips charisma and a wonderful confidence,” says Key. Simply put, he is a really tasty artist.
King also praised the actor in an interview with PEOPLE that was released in July 2023. “I think what’s so remarkable about his performance is not only that he is funny, mischievous, and quite mysterious, as well — just like the Willy Wonka that people will know — but also, he brings such heart to the role, and he’s a brilliant actor,” King continued.
The movie’s Oompa Loompas will be played by Hugh Grant, it was announced at CinemaCon 2023 in April.
Chalamet said, “I think it’s the first time people saw Hugh Grant as the Oompa Loompa,” after the audience watched an unpublished clip. It involved travel. Working with Hugh, one of our best, was a dream come true.
In July 2023, PEOPLE published exclusive photos from the film, one of which featured Grant as an Oompa Loompa standing in a jar. Fans got to see Grant play the part once more thanks to this.
Who is in charge of Wonka?
Willy Wonka is directed by Paul King, who previously worked on Paddington. During the premiere of his Hulu series Reboot, Key described King as “a delightful human being who has this wonderful, childlike heart.” He was the perfect candidate to direct the project, the actor continued.
Simon Farnaby, Simon Rich, and King wrote the Willy Wonka movie’s script.
Does Wonka have a caravan (trailer)?
The first Wonka caravan was made accessible in July 2023. At the beginning of the clip, Chalamet states, “I’ve spent the past seven years traveling the world perfecting my craft,” as he is seen sailing on a boat and then exploring a jungle. He says, “I’m a little bit of a magician, inventor, and chocolate maker.”
In another shot from the video, the actor can be seen tipping his hat while others consume some of his candy creations before floating in the air. Additionally, he speaks with Grant’s Oompa Loompa persona, who warns him not to give up his well-known song and dance routine.
Where is the movie Wonka being shot?
In October 2021, Chalamet told TIME that he had recorded for the movie at the legendary Abbey Road studio in London. In February 2022, Chalamet was seen filming in Oxford, England.
Wonka will be released when? Warner Brothers announced during CinemaCon 2022 that the release date of Wonka has been changed from March 17, 2023, to December 15, 2023.
