Home Cooking

During the pandemic, most of us, even the avid restaurant-goers were forced to cook our own meals. Some people managed to turn the limited supply of simple ingredients we had at home into inventive dishes. Others learned to cook by watching online videos. Still, others hopped on to every Instagram cooking trend that was taking the internet by storm. And for many others, they fell in love with the simple joys of home cooking once more.

Why Home Cooking is Best?

There are plenty of reasons as to why one should cook at home, at least a few times a week. Our modern, fast-paced lifestyles have robbed us of this joy since we have any food we desire from the world over, at our fingertips. With ready-to-cook or ready-to-eat options, takeaways, deliveries from home chefs, and more, most of us can survive for months without having to step into the kitchen. What’s happening is that we are basically missing out on an activity that can make us happier, healthier, and more connected to one another.

Most of us who live in metros will agree. With Swiggy, Zomato, Dunzo, and other food delivery apps available that allow us to order whatever we want in just a few taps, it can be quite tantalizing to give up on home-cooked food. A few rationales as to why everyone should prioritize home cooking are:

1. A chance to reconnect

Cooking with one another and as a family, can provide you with an opportunity to relink or reconnect with your loved ones. Today, as the adults are busy working to earn a living, and kids are busy with online school, TV, and other entertainment, there is little time to connect with each other.

Apart from the nutritious benefits procured from home-cooked food, whipping up meals in the kitchen has other benefits too. According to research, experimenting or trying out new combinations or learning a new recipe altogether can contribute towards building a stronger bond and connection in the respective relationship.

Cooking with your family, friends or loved ones is an inexpensive (and tasty) way to have conversations, laugh, make memories and spend time together.

2. It’s the healthier option

It’s obvious that individuals who cook at home more often instead of opting for takeaway food, have a better overall balanced and healthier diet. It has been observed that takeaway meals usually consist of larger volumes of total fat, saturated fat, sodium, and calories.

Whereas when you cook at home, you naturally do not overdo it with salt, sauces, MSG, trans-fat and more, as these ingredients are often not stocked in our kitchen cabinets. When you combine ingredients together yourself, you have full control over what becomes part of your diet.

3. Keep a watchful eye on calories consumed

Calories are plentiful when it comes to fast food. Most meals procured at eateries, be it an independent big restaurant or a small chain street-side stall are inflated with butter, oil, sugar, and more, which contributes to you piling on the calories.

An average fast-food order contains about 1200 to 1500 calories in total which is basically equivalent to two-thirds of a man’s recommended daily intake and a woman’s total daily recommended calorie intake. Cooking your own meal can ensure standardized nutrition and calorie consumption.

4. Time-saving

Ordering takeaway meals means waiting for the food to arrive or driving all the way to the restaurant to pick it. Based on the time you place your order, the distance between the eatery and your current location, and the delivery person’s knowledge of your location, this can be a time-consuming process as compared to cooking up your own meal at home.

Granted, some meals take hours to prepare and cook, too. But on average, you can cook up a decent Indian meal or a healthy continental one in half an hour.

5. Cost-saving

Preparing your own meals at home can save up a lot of your money in the long run. Think about it! The ingredients you buy at the market to prepare an entire meal is less than the cost of one dish in a restaurant. Additionally, you can also end up acquiring many more meals from a recipe made at home instead of opting for takeaway meals. For instance, consuming last night’s dinner’s leftovers for lunch today.

6. Fun and personalized

Home cooking gives you an upper hand at choosing the foods you love to eat and how exactly you would want them cooked. When you prepare your own food, it gives you a chance to experiment by mixing different spices, seasonings, and other ingredients. You can cook a dish using a different recipe to see what tastes better.

Or use an ingredient in ways you haven’t before. There’s no ground rule to stick to a particular way of cooking or a particular cuisine or dish. Hence, you’re at liberty to cook whatever you like, whenever you like.

7 Enjoy your time at home
